LANDOVER, Md. - The Maryland indoor track and field team rang in the new year on Saturday by hosting the 2003 Terrapin/PVA Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. Marked by impressive individual accomplishments, the meet served as the Terps' final tune-up before they travel to their first scoring competition of the season next weekend.

One standout athlete for the Terps was junior Harold Manning, who took two top-five finishes. His time of 22.18 in the 200 meter was good enough for third place, and his time of 6.87 in the 60 meter earned him fourth place overall. This time set a new personal best for Manning in that event. Also sprinting well for Maryland was sophomore Rob Frelow, who raced to a second place finish in the 400 meter with a time of 49.48.

The distance events were strongpoints for the Terps this weekend, thanks to the leadership skills of junior Mike Prada. Prada took fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:27.82 and second in the 3,000 meter with a time of 8:40.80. This time marked a career best for Prada. Taking third in the mile run was junior Doug Allen with a time of 4:27.39. Allen also had a solid finish in the 3,000 meter, taking fifth place. The Terps took second place in the distance medley with a time of 10:24.64.

In the throws events, sophomore Beau Fay tossed a personal best in the weight throw with a distance of 49.3 feet, earning him second place. He also represented the team in the shot put, taking fourth with a throw of 42.1 feet.

Head coach Bill Goodman remarked that he was very pleased with the effort the team showed throughout the competition. However, he acknowledged that the season has only just begun. "We still have a lot of work to do before the ACC's," Goodman told his team, "but we are definitely moving in the right direction."
